Grade 4 Math Goals

1. Number Sense & Place Value

  • Understand place value up to at least 1,000,000.
  • Read, write, and compare multi-digit numbers using >, <, and =. Understand what the symbols mean, greater than, less than and equal to.
  • Round numbers to the nearest ten, hundred, thousand, etc.

2. Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication, & Division

  • Fluently add and subtract multi-digit numbers.
  • Multiply up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers and two-digit numbers by two-digit numbers.
  • Divide up to four-digit numbers by one-digit numbers with and without remainders.
  • Solve word problems using addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

3. Fractions & Decimals

  • Understand equivalent fractions and compare fractions with different denominators.
  • Add and subtract fractions with like denominators.
  • Convert fractions to decimals and compare decimal values.
  • Understand and work with mixed numbers and improper fractions.

4. Geometry & Measurement

  • Classify and measure angles (right, acute, obtuse).
  • Identify and compare geometric shapes based on properties (sides, angles, symmetry).
  • Understand perimeter and area of squares and rectangles.
  • Use measurement units for length, weight, and capacity (e.g., inches, meters, grams).

5. Data & Graphing

  • Interpret and create bar graphs, line plots, and pictographs.
  • Understand and calculate mean, median, mode, and range.

6. Algebraic Thinking & Patterns

  • Recognize and extend number patterns.
  • Use basic equations with unknowns (e.g., 4 × _ = 24).
  • Solve multi-step word problems using logical reasoning.
