Grade 6 Math Goals

Grade 6 math goals focus on developing a strong foundation in number operations, fractions, decimals, ratios, algebraic thinking, geometry, and data analysis. Here are the key learning objectives for sixth graders:

1. Number Sense & Operations

  • Fluently add, subtract, multiply, and divide multi-digit whole numbers, fractions, and decimals.
  • Understand and apply factors, multiples, prime factorization, and greatest common factor (GCF).
  • Use the least common multiple (LCM) to solve fraction problems.

2. Ratios, Rates, & Proportional Reasoning

  • Understand and use ratios to describe relationships between two quantities.
  • Solve problems using unit rates (e.g., miles per hour, price per item).
  • Use tables, graphs, and equations to represent proportional relationships.

3. Fractions, Decimals, & Percents

  • Convert between fractions, decimals, and percentages.
  • Solve real-world problems involving percentages (e.g., discounts, tax, tips). This is also called consumer math problems.

4. Algebraic Thinking & Equations

  • Write, simplify, and evaluate algebraic expressions with variables.
  • Use properties of operations (distributive, associative, commutative) to simplify expressions.
  • Solve one-step equations and inequalities.

5. Geometry & Measurement

  • Find the area, perimeter, and volume of rectangles, triangles, and irregular shapes.
  • Understand and use coordinate planes, including negative numbers.
  • Identify and measure angles, including complementary and supplementary angles.

6. Data, Statistics, & Probability

  • Represent and interpret data using graphs, histograms, and box plots.
  • Calculate measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode, range).
  • Understand basic probability concepts and determine the probability of simple events.
