Grade 8 Math Goals

Grade 8 math goals build upon the foundation of previous years and prepare students for high school algebra and geometry. Here are the key focus areas:

1. Number Sense & Operations

  • Understanding and working with irrational numbers (e.g., square roots, π).
  • Performing operations with exponents, including laws of exponents.
  • Working with scientific notation for very large and very small numbers.

2. Algebra & Equations

  • Solving multi-step linear equations and inequalities.
  • Understanding and using functions, including linear functions.
  • Identifying and analyzing patterns in sequences and graphs.
  • Working with proportional relationships and slope (rate of change).

3. Geometry

  • Understanding transformations (translations, rotations, reflections, dilations).
  • Using the Pythagorean Theorem to find distances and missing side lengths.
  • Working with angles, triangles, and other geometric figures.
  • Understanding and applying formulas for volume, surface area, and area of complex shapes.

4. Data Analysis & Probability

  • Interpreting and comparing different types of graphs (scatter plots, histograms, box plots).
  • Understanding trends and making predictions based on data.
  • Calculating probabilities of compound events.

5. Problem-Solving & Critical Thinking

  • Applying mathematical concepts to real-world situations.
  • Using logical reasoning and multiple approaches to solve problems.
  • Exploring connections between different areas of mathematics.
